Getting Started
Turning On Dark Mode in Safari
Dark Mode works inside Safari, so Safari needs to be allowed to use it. The Safari Setup Guide in the app walks you through these steps.
- Open Settings › Apps › Safari › Extensions. On iOS 17, it’s Settings › Safari › Extensions.
- Tap Dark Mode and turn on Allow Extension.
- Under Permissions, set All Websites to Allow, so Dark Mode can reach every page.
You can also do this from Safari itself: tap the puzzle icon in the address bar, then Manage Extensions.
Opening Dark Mode in Safari
On any website, tap the puzzle icon in Safari’s address bar, then Dark Mode. This opens Safari’s Dark Mode menu, where you can change the theme for every website or just the one you’re on. Settings you change there show up in the app too.
On, Auto and Off
- On makes every website dark.
- Auto turns dark mode on following a schedule.
- Off leaves websites as they are.
Choosing What Auto Follows
In the app, open Schedule:
- System appearance follows your iPhone or iPad’s own light and dark appearance.
- Sunset to sunrise turns dark mode on after sunset. If you allow location, sunset is worked out from where you are, rounded to about a kilometre. If you don’t, it’s estimated from your time zone, which is usually within an hour of the real time.
- Custom schedule turns dark mode on and off at times you choose.
Themes
Open Theme in the app to pick one of four presets: Default, Midnight, Warm and OLED (pure black). The sliders below them change brightness, contrast, sepia and grayscale. The preview at the top shows a page in your theme as you change it.
Safari’s Dark Mode menu has more options, such as the background and text colors, the font, and the Dynamic or Filter mode.
Changing One Website
In Safari’s Dark Mode menu, while you’re on the website:
- Turn off the switch next to the website’s name to leave that site as it is.
- Choose Apply to › This website, then change the theme. Your changes stay on that site only.
The Websites screen in the app lists every website you’ve changed. Swipe left on one, or tap Edit, to remove it.
Websites That Already Have a Dark Theme
Dark Mode leaves websites that already have their own dark theme as they are. To use Dark Mode’s theme on one instead, open Safari’s Dark Mode menu on that site and turn it on.
Syncing and Backups
The app and Safari’s Dark Mode menu share one set of settings: a change in either shows in the other.
Turn on Sync with iCloud in the app to use the same settings on every iPhone and iPad signed in to your Apple Account.
Backup & Restore in the app exports your settings to a file and imports them again. Importing a backup replaces your current settings. Reset All Settings puts everything back the way it was when you installed the app.
Troubleshooting
Websites Aren’t Turning Dark
- Check that Dark Mode is set to On, or to Auto during its scheduled hours.
- Check that the extension is turned on and allowed on All Websites (see Getting Started).
- Check that the website isn’t switched off in Safari’s Dark Mode menu.
- Reload the page.
A Page Looks Wrong
Some pages draw in ways the default Dynamic mode can’t read. In Safari’s Dark Mode menu, choose Apply to › This website, then set Mode to Filter.
Fixes for many websites arrive with the site rules, which update by themselves about once a day. To check for new ones now, open Safari’s Dark Mode menu, then Settings › Site rules › Update now.
Dark Mode Isn’t in Safari’s Menu
Turn the extension on in Settings › Apps › Safari › Extensions. If it’s already on, turn it off and on again, then reload the page.
My Settings Don’t Match on My Other Device
Make sure Sync with iCloud is on in the app on both devices, and that both are signed in to the same Apple Account. Changes can take a little while to arrive.
Sunset to Sunrise Isn’t Using My Location
Dark Mode asks for location only once. If you chose not to allow it, sunset is estimated from your time zone. To allow it later, open Settings › Apps › Dark Mode › Location and choose While Using the App.
