Dark Mode for Websites - Privacy Policy

Effective Date: November 2, 2026

Dark Mode for Websites (“Dark Mode”, “the app”) is an app and Safari extension for iPhone and iPad that makes websites dark. Dark Mode works on your iPhone or iPad alone. It never collects or sends the pages you visit.

The Short Version

  • Dark Mode has no accounts, no analytics and no ads.
  • The developer receives no data about you or the websites you visit.
  • Everything Dark Mode knows stays on your device. The exception is iCloud sync, which you turn on yourself and which stores your settings in your own iCloud account.

Web Pages

To make pages dark, the extension reads each page inside Safari, on your device. Nothing it reads leaves your device.

Some pages use stylesheets from other servers. To darken those, the extension downloads the same stylesheets again from the servers the page already uses, without your cookies. Nothing about you is added to those requests.

Site Rules from GitHub

Once a day at most, Dark Mode downloads site rules from GitHub. These are public files with fixes for individual websites. That download carries nothing about you or the sites you visit. Like any web request, it reaches GitHub from your device’s internet connection. You can turn automatic updates off in Safari’s Dark Mode menu, under Settings › Site rules.

Your Settings

Your theme, schedule and website rules are stored on your device, shared between the app and the Safari extension. Website rules are the websites you’ve given their own theme, kept dark, or excluded.

When Sync with iCloud is on, your settings, including the websites you’ve set rules for, are stored in your iCloud account by Apple, so your other devices can use them. The developer can’t see them. You can turn it off at any time in the app.

You can export your settings to a file. That file goes only where you send it.

Website Icons

The Websites list in the app shows each site’s icon, loaded from that site. When it does, that website receives an ordinary request for its icon from your device.

Location

Sunset to sunrise can use your location, rounded to about a kilometre, to work out sunset. It’s stored only in your settings. With Sync with iCloud on, it’s in your iCloud account along with the rest of your settings. Dark Mode asks for location only when you choose Sunset to sunrise. If you don’t allow it, sunset is estimated from your time zone instead. You can turn location access off at any time in your device’s Settings.

Children

Dark Mode collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
